This little village seems to have been founded by the Sabines emigrated from "Ficule of Rome" around X century.
Its name perhaps derives from the Latin word "Figulus" (potter) the ancient, but still alive traditional activity among the inhabitants.
Ficulle was an important junction exercising control over the new Via Cassia, that crossed the village of Montavano and led from Chiusi to Perugia.
The first walls as defence were built in X and XI century. Between XIII and XIV century it was first placed under the dominion of the Ghibelline Family called Filippeschi and then under the Monaldeschi in 1313.
Despite the presence of strongholds and of two citadels, built as a defence of the urban center, it was frequently pillaged and damaged, during XIV century.
In 1461 it was submitted to the power of the church. Then followed a peaceful period and flourishing re-building, during which it expanded also its territories. In XVI century Ficulle became a free commune for a short period, but then remained under the control of the papal dominion till it joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
The borgo still preserve its Medieval mantle with its small old squares and a labyrinth of narrow alleys. Ficulle is also known as the village of the terracotta; hand made products may still be bought in many typical craftsmen's studios that are still open, especially an original shaped "truffa" that is an unusual inflated vase that deceives by its contents.
Besides the production of an extrordinary kind of oil, the traditional cooking is made up of genuine and healthy ingredients, linked to the earth and to the rhythms of the seasons; the food, like Proust's "petites madeleines" conjures up ancient images and sensations: bruschetta ( garnished toast ), liver canapes, tagliatelle pasta in goose sauce, roasts, nut pies, and many others.
