This borgo rises on a hill which, from the north shore of the river Aso, dominates the valley of the same name as well as a stupendous landscape facing the Adriatic sea.
Moresco is a typical borgo with a Medieval aspect having a characteristic ellipsoidal structure extending into the inner courtyard of its castle. The habitat, made up of narrow winding streets is still surrounded by its original walls and dominated by mighty XII century heptagonal towers complete with Ghibelline battlements.
According to popular belief, the castle in times gone by, rose near the river Aso and not at the top of the hill where it can be admired now.
Various legends abound as to its foundation. One recounts that it was built by a handful of Saracens in the service of Roberto il Guiscardo, who settled in the lands and bred silkworms in the area, followed by the cultivation of the mulberry tree from which the name “Moresco” could derive. In another truer version, the tale tells of a fortress built by Monterubbiano and others by Fermo, as a bastion against Arab raiders and from this came the name of Moresco castle.
The name could derive from “Morrecine”, a word in dialect to signify the pile of stones on which the castle rests.
The history of this citadel is cloaked in innuendo. On its territory during the Roman era some important settlements rose, which in the Longobard era acquired ever more power and brought about a uniquely important hill centre, a place of residence for the scattered population. The first written documentation about the existence of Moresco castle goes back to 1083 when it was mentioned in a parchment, now preserved at Fermo. This fortress was held in a great esteem by the city of Fermo in the past and considered it as its own strategic stronghold in the war against Ascoli and its allies. As seen from some notorial deeds, in 1146, Tebaldus comes (count) de Moresco was the lord of the castle.
In 1248, Cardinal Raniero, apostolic legate, gave Moresco castle back to Fermo (et castrum seu villam morisci) previously taken away by the entrepreneur, Federico II.
Ten years later in 1258, King Manfredi, giving thanks for services rendered by Fermo, confirmed its jurisdiction over some of the castles, among which was Moresco.
After various events, Giorgo di Bordone and Felice Crescenzi di Santandrea became lords of Moresco. In 1266, they ceded Moresco castle to the Doge of Venice and podestà of Fermo, Lorenzo Tiepoldo, for the sum of 500 Volterrane Lire.
With the coming of Sforza and his entrance into the Ferman state, a dark period in Moresco's history began. In 1433, Francesco Sforza stationed himself at Monterubbiano for five months from January to May, wreaking damage on the neighbouring villages including Moresco, which was forced to supply the troops with wine, oil, hay and money.
In 1481 there was serious bloodshed: Doctor Pellegrino Morroni di Fermo, who happened to be in Moresco castle, was betrayed and assassinated by some Monterubbianese, a fact caused by the continued rivalry between Ascoli and Fermo.
In 1586, Sisto V, Marchigian Pope, installed the Montalto garrison, removing it from central government and placing it directly under the Holy see and the Rome tribunal. The borgo of Moresco was attached to this garrison.
In 1648, Sergeant Giovanni Morelli, a Moresco citizen, led the Moreschan garrison of troops, called to arms by the killing of Mons. Visconti, governor of Fermo.
In 1848, Moresco became an autonomous commune and remained so until 1869 when it was attached to Monterubbiano under the Reign of Italy.

Every year between 9th and 11th August, Moresco holds its historic “Sagra della polenta con vongole” (Polenta with clams festival). In this traditional dish, matching polenta, a typical hinterland food, with clams, a typical sea food, reflects the origins of Piceno, a strip of land between mountains and sea.
The days of the celebration see the warm participation on the part of the little borgo's citizens when the polenta is served with a rich and succulent clam sauce. The event takes place in the breathtaking Medieval square and happy bands of musicians, to the enjoyment of all.
